Project: Kitchen + Bath Remodel

Goal: Modernize and brighten a 1980s home.

Location: Charlotte's Oxford Hunt Neighborhood

Kitchen and Bath Designer: In-House

How We Converted a 1980s Kitchen into a Modern Kitchen in Charlotte

Some homes age gracefully. Others need a polite but firm intervention. Botox for a home often comes in the form of a kitchen remodel.

This home in the Oxford Hunt neighborhood of Charlotte had all the hallmarks of a 1980s layout. Closed-off rooms, limited flow, and just enough darkness to make morning coffee feel optional. The Hopedale Builders team designed this project in-house, and our goal was to rework the space into something open, functional, and visually grounded in classic design with modern performance.

The result is a custom kitchen remodel that makes the entire home feel more modern, with the added bonus of an updated bathroom. We were able to turn a semi-custom production home into a fully custom, standout space.

Here are the highlights.

Inset Cabinetry with Warm Contrast

We anchored the space with inset cabinetry, pairing a painted perimeter with a walnut-stained island for contrast that feels intentional, not trendy. Inside the pocketing door hutch cabinets, a walnut interior adds a tailored surprise. Details matter, especially the ones you do not see at first glance.

Honed Bianco Berrini marble countertops soften the palette while keeping things refined. It is the kind of surface that looks better the longer you live with it.

A Range Alcove That Works Overtime

The range wall was designed to do more than house appliances. It had to perform.

A Fulgor Milano Sofia induction range sits within a custom alcove, flanked by built-in side niches that balance storage and symmetry. Above, a concealed ceiling hood keeps sightlines clean without sacrificing ventilation.

Nearby, a 36-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator integrates seamlessly into the cabinetry, keeping the visual flow uninterrupted and the snacks properly chilled. Somebody has their priorities in order.

Architectural Details That Elevate the Everyday

If you look upwards in this home, you'll find one of our favorite features. A V-groove ceiling with beams adds depth and character without overwhelming the space. It is a subtle architectural layer that turns a functional kitchen into a place people actually want to linger.

Beyond the kitchen, this project expanded into a full walk-in pantry, a new laundry space, and a full bathroom remodel. Once you improve flow in one area, the rest of the house tends to follow.

Correcting the Layout and Circulation

What we are most proud of is not just the finishes. It is how the home now lives.

We reworked the original layout to fix circulation issues, opening the kitchen to surrounding spaces and creating a natural, intuitive flow. What started as a semi-custom production home now feels entirely bespoke, designed with purpose instead of limitation.

That is the difference thoughtful planning makes. It also makes dinner prep far more enjoyable.
