When you love your neighborhood, creating more space often makes more sense than moving. For this Historic Dilworth project, our clients wanted to expand their home in two meaningful ways. First, they envisioned a covered porch for gathering with family and friends year-round. Second, they wanted a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to provide comfortable accommodations for overnight guests.

A Historic Dilworth Home Gets an ADU and Covered Porch

Hopedale Builders collaborated with Angie Lauer of ALB Design Studio, who designed an addition that blended naturally with the home's historic architecture while adding the features the homeowners wanted.

A New Covered Porch

The original open brick paver patio was replaced with a spacious covered porch that encourages outdoor living. Designed and built with entertaining in mind, the space provides plenty of room to relax, dine, and host guests while extending the home's living area into the backyard.

Bluestone Flooring and Tongue-and-Groove Ceiling

The porch features a bluestone floor, a wrought-iron railing, and a tongue-and-groove ceiling that reflect the home's traditional character. These classic materials create a welcoming outdoor space that feels right at home alongside the existing architecture.

Custom Fireplace & Outdoor Amenities

Comfort was a priority throughout the design. A custom fireplace with built-in log storage creates a natural gathering place, while flush-mounted Infratech heaters make the porch enjoyable during cooler weather. Television and speaker accommodations complete an outdoor living space, ready for everything from quiet evenings to game-day celebrations.

Detached Two-Car ADU

The second phase of the project replaced the existing garage with a new two-car ADU featuring its own address. Designed as a fully functional guest home, the space includes custom cabinetry, cedar-shake siding, a ceiling-cassette mini-split system, spray-foam insulation, and everything visitors need for a comfortable stay.
