The Malloy property in Dilworth, North Carolina is a classic American Craftsman home with every detail true to form, inside and out. Their Craftsman style home already featured signature elements, such as thick tapered columns, shake siding, rafter tails, earth tones, and natural stone accents. So, why mess with a good thing?
Truth be told, the Malloys wanted more: a covered outdoor living area where they could have family hangouts and entertain friends. The challenge? The addition needed to blend in, as if it had always been part of the original home.
Hopedale Builders set out on creating this outdoor living area by first considering what its surroundings are and asking, What are the best exterior design ideas for a craftsman house? Luckily, the patio and external elements answered this question immediately.
Tennessee stone anchors the tapered columns and climbs the entire height of the stately fireplace, while neutral travertine stone tile lines the flooring, tying the original patio to the new addition. Also continued from the original structure to the new porch addition are the rafter tails, which extend past the tie beams to the edge of the roof.
The Hopedale Builders designer cleverly used shake siding on the inner surface of the porch covering, adjacent to the vaulted ceiling. This carries the original craftsman feature from the exterior of the original home to the new addition. It’s just one more element the design-build team employed to make the addition look as if it’s been there the entire time.
